Final project

Introduction

Weekly progress

Week 1
We formed FLIP TEAM 2 in G6 group in Teacher Fauzi’s class,After class, the group leader created a group and we started discussing our topic.

Three topics we could choose:

  • Creating awareness (such as Global Warming, Recycle, etc.)
  • Explaining a process (such as "how to" video)
  • Defining a concept (such as "What is Fast Fashion", "What is Color Wheel", etc.)

Faced with three themes, our group voted and we finally chose Theme 2.

fig1.1 Topic voting results

We think that for 2, there are many topics we can explore, such as science, food, manufacturing and technology, for example, if we agree on the theme of manufacturing, our topics can be "The recycling process" or "How processed food is made"

Then our group started to list ideas. If you have any ideas, add them to the list one by one.We started by choosing how to make mung beans

Ideas:
- how to recycle crayons
- How a seed grows into a tree
- How to make handmade soaps
- How caterpillars transform into a butterfly
- How volcano erupts
- How a virus spreads
- How to make mungbean cake
- how animation productions work
- how to conduct the scientific method
- how to make user-centred designs

Week 2

But we are not sure if we will make a video about how to make mung beans this week, but our main goal is to pass on traditional culture. We want to change the theme to mooncakes, which seem to be more popular than mung beans, so our goal can also be to promote it more.

We plan to send our ideas to the teacher, and after receiving the teacher's feedback, we will further modify our theme.

We took another vote and we finally decided to change the theme

Week 3

We then began preparing the presentation and gathering reference material for the final video. We were responsible for adding each section to the slides and adding our names to the end of the task.

This is the division of labor for our slides

Our group found four different painting styles, and we finally voted for the four styles.

Week 4

This week, we presented slides to the teacher. This is our division of labor for the slides. I was responsible for pages 4-5.

fig1.6 Division of speech

In the fourth week, we started to divide the work for the final product. Most of the members in our group didn’t know how to make animations, so the animation was made by the four of us, and the rest of the members were responsible for other tasks.

Final project tasks:
  • Script: Tristan Zhang
  • Voice-over: Yong
  • Storyboard: Sheryne  Ziyang
  • Animation:Yang Jiayi,Shao Han, velicia
  • Editor/sound effects: Wang Yifan
Our team members created the script

Week 5-6

After the script was completed, our team members started to make a storyboard to facilitate our post-production animation. We completed the storyboard in great detail, including the duration, scenes, and voice-overs of each important part, which will be very convenient for our later work.

Then we finished recording the sound.

Week 7

I and other team members (Shao han, Valerie, Sheryne, Velicia) started to make animations,This is our allocation

  • Yang Jiayi: Scene 17-21(with ShaoHan);Scene 22,24
  • Shao Han: Scene 8-11;Scene 17-21(with Jiayi)
  • Velicia: Scene 1, 3, 4
  • Sheryne: Scene 2, 5, 6, 7
  • Valerie: Scene 12-16, 25-26
I started designing the final product through storyboards.

I designed the scene, which was my initial progress, but I was not very good at drawing the local hand movements, so this part was handed over to Shao han

Our theme is about mooncakes, so the main color of my design is warmer, which is more in line with the atmosphere of Mid-Autumn Festival. Then the overall color of our group's design tends to be warm yellow.I sent my initial progress to our discussion group

fig1.9 Animation progress

Through some of the scenes I drew, the group members began to determine the color tone

fig2.0 Main color

I completed all my scenes in PS. I needed to draw the final mooncake pattern in detail to beautify the mooncake. Before completing the final mooncake product, the mooncakes in the process of processing step by step are also in different states. After continuous processing, the surface of the mooncake will also change. I searched for information on the Internet and drew different states.

Apply egg liquid on the surface of the raw mooncake, and the color will change from white to creamy yellow. After air drying, the yellow color will deepen, and the final product will be darker in color.

After the team members finished their designs, they started discussing with me and made further revisions based on the feedback they received.

fig2.3 Discusstion

We will also discuss scene color issues in the group

fig2.4 Discusstion

I have completed all my parts and will then add the hands drawn by Shao Han.

fig2.5 progress

I finished drawing all the scenes before the last week of class and sent them to the group. The group leader added them to our slides and got feedback from the teacher.

I finished my scene,in the final week, we received feedback that our illustrations were too detailed and only needed to be animated subtly, which we adjusted in post.

fig2.6 progress

After completing all the illustrations, the team leader shared Google Drive and put all the completed scenes in PNG format, so that it would be convenient for other team members to start making AE animations later.

fig2.7 All scenes

After we finished all the scenes, another team member (Wang Yifan) started to create the animation in AE,After the production was completed in AE, we added subtitles for easier viewing.

Final Submission

Feedback

Week 4
  • make the information simpler.
  • Make a script (using voiceover for the video) to be able to visualize the video.
  • then make a storyboard.
  • The animation doesn’t have to be fully illustrated per frame (I think he meant that we can use motion graphic animation so its easier)

Week 6
  • pie chart: the other objects can be smaller while the piechart can be made bigger.
  • Think and reevaluate about certain scenes bcs it may too long (with voiceover included).
  • Final editing: animate part by part. render so that we will have mov and mp4 (AE). move on to premiere pro: then can just slot in the renders based on timing.
  • Storytelling: eg. scene 1: highlight certain words like Mooncakes and Tang Dynasty in the animation.

Week 7
  • The illustration is too detailed and needs to be simplified to only complete the basic animation

Reflection
Experience:
At the beginning of the project, my team and I chose "a process" among three themes and finally decided to make an animation about the mooncake making process. I was responsible for the animation design of scenes 17 to 21 and scenes 22 and 24. During the design process, I focused on warm-toned cartoon scenes to fit the interaction of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Through team division of labor and collaboration, the project progressed smoothly.
Observations
During the project, I felt that clear division of labor and detailed storyboards were crucial to animation production. In addition, effective communication and timely feedback among team members also significantly improved work efficiency.

Findings:
Incorporating traditional cultural elements can effectively enhance the appeal of the design and strengthen the audience's cultural identity. The choice of color and style plays an important role in conveying information, and short visual expressions can enhance the audience's understanding and interest. In general, this group collaboration was completed smoothly. Although the process was not very smooth, the final result was acceptable.I hope I can complete the tasks I take on in the group better in the future.
