Project 2: Design Proposition

Week 4

In the fourth week, our group gave a presentation

Here is the feedback we got from two teachers:

  • Changing the storyline
  • Hotpot closing
  • Impact on the protagonist
  • More emotional character design
  • Establishing a connection with the audience
  • Using 3D techniques
  • Layering, 3D effects
  • Motion graphics

Then we sat down and discussed that we needed to change the story line to make it more attractive. After our discussion, we made an appointment with the teacher online to discuss our ideas.

After discussing with the teacher, our group conducted an online meeting.

The teacher gave us a website. Our finished product can be based on the works above as a reference. These are two of the examples we found. Our character design style can be designed based on this exaggerated technique and designed from different angles.

We then changed the storyline, the entire story line was changed, and our characters had to be redesigned. I was in charge of the character design. This is our current progress

In the initial script, I designed the characters in AI,After we decided on the design style, I started looking for references

The overall style of the design is a small head, a big body, and long arms. My idea is that the five-year-old protagonist wears a school uniform, the 15-year-old protagonist wears casual clothes, the 25-year-old protagonist wears a graduation suit, and the 35-year-old protagonist wears a suit.

But after discussing with the team, I found that there were many small details in the painting that needed to be modified. Different details would make the picture messy. After discussing with the team members, I made some modifications.

Question modification:
  • First of all, the head-to-body ratio of my characters is not uniform. The heads of adult characters can be uniformly reduced to 1:6 or 1:6.5, and the head-to-body ratio of children can be maintained at 1:3 or 1:3.5. The age difference is obvious.

  • Keep the complexity of all characters' clothes consistent, avoid too complex or too simple. The costumes of the supporting characters I drew are too simple, so I have to balance this.

  • The facial features were partially unified, such as the eyes, nose, and skin color. The skin color I designed at the beginning was dark and light, and I had to modify these details while maintaining each person's facial features.

  • The shoes are not uniform. Most of the characters have flat shoes, except for the little boy whose shoes are arc-shaped. They need to be unified.

  • The length of arms is not uniform. The length of an adult's arms should be the same, but a child's arms will vary because they are still growing.
Below is my first revision, I will change the most basic issues

Week 5

After revising the above issues, our group had another discussion and finally decided to modify our script, which meant that the characters we designed had changed. I revised it again.

Before I started to redesign the new characters, I checked and revised the details of the designed characters again, and modified the costumes of some characters.

I started looking for character references through our latest script. Our new script contains:
  • Chef
  • Chef’s assistant
  • 3-4 customers
  • 2 waiters
  • Family (mom, dad, 15 year old child)
  • A couple
Then I designed more characters. I was responsible for designing the chef, and the waiter design was given to another team member. Our theme is about hot pot, so I used the most classic black and red outfit in the clothing design, which also reminded me of Haidilao’s outfit.

figCharacter Design Process

After the storyline is approved in the feedback session, we start storyboarding. We start with line drawings.

Our storyboard artist created a trial animation video so we could understand the process for the final animation.

Final submission

Feedbacks
Week 04 (25/02/2025) :
Change the storyline to create a more emotional connection with the audience
For example, make the hotpot close down when the MC is a teenager to show how it affects the MC when he is an adult
Use more 3d animation skills such as layering, 3d effects and motion graphic
Use a show like Delicious in Dungeon as a reference

Week 05 (04/03/2025) :
Proceed with the advertisement storyline
Make sure to choose a suitable artstyle
If possible, combine a lot of animation styles (2d and 3d)

Reflections
Experience:
Within the past two weeks, I have been primarily capable for the plan of 7 characters. First of all, I have to be discover appropriate reference materials for each character. These reference materials incorporate the character's appearance, clothing fashion, expression points of interest, etc. Since each character has its claim one of a kind foundation and identity characteristics, I got to bind together the by and large plan fashion without changing these center characteristics. This handle requires me to conduct an in-depth investigation of the points of interest of each character to guarantee that their picture is steady with the story foundation and can shape a bound together entirety outwardly. Be that as it may, within the starting plan arrange, a few subtle elements are not simple to identify, such as facial highlights, shoes, arm length, etc. At this time, the input from group individuals is especially imperative. They can make proposals from distinctive points to assist me encourage progress the plan

Observations
Amid the plan handle, I went through numerous forms of corrections. Each amendment may be a encourage polishing of the character's subtle elements. For example, within the ensemble plan, I got to alter it agreeing to the character's occupation and identity characteristics to form it more appropriate for the character's character. At the same time, within the expression plan, I moreover have to be plan expressions that match the character's feelings agreeing to the script. In spite of the fact that the topic of our story is item plan, the passionate expression of the character may not be as wealthy as that of conventional story sorts, but I still have to be guarantee that each expression can precisely pass on the character's passionate state. Through ceaseless alteration and optimization, I slowly aced how to bind together the subtle elements, and at the same time progressed my capacity to control the generally fashion of the character.

Findings:
Through this errand, I profoundly realized that character plan isn't  as it were almost forming the appearance, but moreover a comprehensive expression of the character's identity, foundation and feelings. In future plans, I will pay more consideration to the solidarity of points of interest to guarantee that each character can superbly coordinated into the by and large environment of the story.
