Week 6 Letters

 Understanding letterforms

The uppercase letter forms below suggest symmetry, but in fact it is not symmetrical. It is easy to see the two different stroke weights of the Baskerville stroke form (below); more noteworthy is the fact that each bracket connecting the serif to the stem has a unique arc.
 Form / Counterform

Just as important as recognizing specific letterforms is developing a sensitivity to the counterform (or counter)—the space describes, and often contained, by the strokes of the form. When letters are joined to form words, the counterform includes the spaces between them. Its worth noting here that the sense of the ‘S’ holds at each stage of enlargement, while the ‘g’ tends to loose its identity, as individual elements are examined without the context of the entire letterform.

INSTRUCTIONS

EXERCISE-Task2:Type Expression and Formatting

Task2 :Exercise-Text Foematting
According to the initial use of ID last week, the teacher asked us to choose one of the three articles for text typesetting, and I chose the second one for homework,Below are my two initial designs and the final version after getting the teacher's advice.

Typesetting Type Expression of Illusion(without grid visible)

In the figure below, when the text layout needs a grid, each line of text should be close to the grid. The biggest problem I encountered was that this line of text was close to the grid, and the others were not.

fig1.3 in the process of making

In this photo, I have adjusted the baseline options, and here it is important to note that in the displacement in the first baseline line, we have to choose the line spacing

I adjusted the font size here

Note that the start and interval in the baseline grid should be consistent with other facilities

FEEDBACK
Week 6-Ms. Xin reminded me that the layout of an article should be coordinated and reasonably distributed, and the beginning of an article should avoid only one line of text, which does not look beautiful.I need to correct that.

Week 7-The design of the main title is still focused on expressing the meaning of the key words, rather than random design,Reasonable coordination of the blank parts of the article, so that readers look more beautiful and comfortable.

                                                                                REFLECTION
Experience
After two weeks of practice, I have done three editions in this week, and gradually mastered how to typeset and how to adjust it to make the whole look more coordinated. I also refer to the typesetting of other designers on the network to increase my inspiration .

Observation
In this week's class, I observed the students' homework. It is not that the richer the layout is, the better it will be, nor the simpler the layout will be bad. The Mr Vinod always stressed that we should pay attention to the meaning we want to express, rather than the simple and meaningless design.

Finding
We don't need to be very rich in typography, we want to express our own ideas to the reader

Grid systems

A grid is a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines that intersect at regular intervals. In typographic design, a grid system is a method for organizing and clarifying text on a page, and amplifying its meaning.A grid is not about painting a page - creating the perfect composition within the frame of the paper trim.We need to understand ,
• the amount of text/images
• the kinds of text/images
• the levels of meaning and importance within the text/images
• the relationship between text and images
• the relationship between text/ images and the reader.
 Components of the grid
Field
The basic component of any grid.
The height of a field is calculated as a multiple of the text leading. Its width is determined by the length of a line of text
