INSTRUCTION

Weekly progress

Week 2

In this semester's work assignments, You Siyuan and I were responsible for the planning of the 3D portion, while Dea Natasha and Lew Yong Le were responsible for the planning of the 2D portion.

We've revised the storyboard; this is the latest, finalized storyboard.

Week 3

We first need to create a white model, which requires designing the seasonings and hot pot.I initially tried modeling in Blender, but after completing it, I found it wasn't very good. I'm more familiar with designing in Maya than with modeling, so I switched to Maya.

These are some detailed pictures.

This is the overall white model.

Dea Natasha did the background design, and Lew Yong Le started creating the animation in After Effects.

Week 4

Start working on the remaining white model and begin texturing.

The hot pot contains six ingredients, making it more abundant.

When we first made the pot, it didn't really look like a hot pot, so we redesigned the pot base.

We made the rest of the white models.

Start pasting images

We started by texturing the seasonings, but the initial style was too realistic, so we re-textured them to make it look more like an animated design.

Lew Yong Le begins creating After Effects animations

Week 5

We finished the remaining coloring and texturing.

Later, I looked up some references, changed the color of the hot pot, and added soup noodles to make it look more realistic.

We helped create the chef's three-view drawing. Making the joints separately makes it easier for Lew Yong Le to create the motion graphics later.

Week 6

We need to create special effects related to food explosions.

But we'd rather have the feeling of a powder explosion.

After discussion, another version was revised.

I rendered one version first.

Week 7

This week we reported on all our current progress, and after discussing with Teacher Kamal, we revised the questions. We modeled the object again.

After discussing with us, Lew Yong Le didn't follow the previous work we did for the final effect, but instead made new changes. Lew Yong Le is in charge of planning the final part of the 3D animation. My Maya render took too long, so this effect was created in After Effects.

Feedback

Week 01 (05/02/2026) :

Mr Kamal:
  1. Decide how long it is for 2d animation and 3d animation sections.
  2. Use excel to show each image, description, duration and who does that part.
  3. Can already start animating the scenes with no characters first.
  4. Divide task. 2 people do the graphics, 2 people do the animations.
  5. Finalise all assets this week.
Week 02 (12/02/2026) :

Mr Kamal :
  1. 2nd version is a bit hard to animate
  2. Storyboard looks good
  3. Don’t change the storyboard anymore
  4. Don’t use frame by frame, it takes too long
  5. Add some depth to each scene
  6. Proceed with this new storyboard
  7. Try with different animation styles
Mr Kannan :
  1. Keep the storyline simple
  2. Play with motion graphic
  3. Do a quick test in one scene
  4. The puppetry is too simple at the moment
  5. Look for reference
Week 03 (19/02/2026) :

Mr Kamal :
  1. Fix the perspective
  2. Don’t worry about color, it can be changed later
  3. Kitchen can be brown, while dining area becomes blue
  4. Divide the tasks more equally. Help each other out
Week 04 (26/02/2026) :

Mr Kamal :
  1. Add subtle vignette to the wall
  2. Continue drawing the background
  3. Make sure render (3d model) must match the 2d style
  4. Explore flat/cartoon shading
  5. Find toon shade
  6. Try add 3d models into 2d scenes
  7. Can try animate one character first
  8. Test with the “chef cutting the meat” scene
Week 05 (05/03/2026) :

Mr Kamal :

  1. Character turnaround is nice
  2. Proceed to animation
  3. For walk cycle, do three steps then loop it
  4. Legs cannot just be swinging back and forth. Need to bend the knee
  5. 2 steps per sec
  6. Divide the animation tasks among the three animators in your group
  7. Make sure to finish it by 17/18th March
Week 06 (12/03/2026) :

Mr Kamal :
  1. Make sure to finish the animation by next Tuesday the latest to prepare for the presentation on Thursday.
  2. Choose suitable songs and sound effects.
  3. Need to do slight changes to some vectors, but most of them are fine.
  4. Adjust the animation graph.
  5. The 3D effect is too slow.
Week 07 (19/03/2026) :

Mr Kamal :
  1. Cut the scene right after the walk cycle ends, or else it looks like the movement is incomplete.
  2. Can add more camera movements, like in the scene where they walk into the restaurant.
  3. Draw some bubbles in the soup, and smoke coming out of the pot.
  4. Do some chewing movement in the eating scene.
  5. Remove the shadow from the name font, it makes the logo look old.
  6. The 3d animation could be a bit faster and have more camera movements.
  7. Make sure to finish the 3d rendering by 29th.

Reflection

My seven-week Major 2 has ended, and the second half of the project was successfully completed. I was able to apply the knowledge I've gained over the past few years and also master many new technologies I'd never tried before. Overall, it was a semester I gave it my all, which will lay the foundation for our upcoming internship. I was fortunate to have smooth communication with my group members and complete our final thesis. I also want to thank Professor Kamal for his hard work and insightful advice. I'm very happy to have worked with Professor Kamal, and I hope my upcoming internship will go smoothly, allowing me to apply the knowledge I've acquired over the past three years to real-life situations. I will also continue to learn new knowledge.
